EN 13706 vs ASTM D3917 vs GB 50608

These FRP documents address different layers of a procurement specification. They can be used together, but none is a direct one-for-one substitute for the others.

ComparisonEN 13706ASTM D3917GB 50608
Primary scopeMulti-part specification for pultruded reinforced-plastic profiles: designation, test methods/general requirements and specific profile requirements.Dimensional tolerances for standard thermosetting glass-reinforced pultruded rods, bars, shapes and flat sheet.Engineering application standard for FRP in strengthening and new structures, including design, construction and acceptance.
Current edition to citeEN 13706 Parts 1–3: 2002; confirm the national adoption used by the project.ASTM D3917-23 is active as of this review.GB 50608-2020; confirm project jurisdiction and amendments.
What it controlsProfile designation, property tests, general and grade-specific requirements; Part 3 identifies E23 and E17 profile grades.Cross-section dimensions, width/diameter, straightness, twist, flatness, angularity and camber.Material, design, strengthening/new-structure applications, construction and quality acceptance in Chinese engineering practice.
What it does not replaceProject structural design, connection design, fire classification or application-specific approval.Mechanical-property qualification, structural grade, fire performance or project design.A product manufacturing specification or automatic equivalence to EN/ASTM test methods.
RFQ useState part, grade, required properties, profile and test evidence.State edition and the applicable dimensional tolerance table plus any tighter custom tolerances.State the project clauses, design assumptions, material tests, construction and acceptance documents.

Scope and edition status were reviewed against ASTM International, BSI/European national standards listings and current Chinese government construction references on 13 August 2026. Always purchase or access the authorized standard text and confirm the project-required edition.

How to cite standards in an FRP RFQ

Write the complete standard identifier, edition and applicable part or clause. Pair the citation with the product geometry, grade, material, property minima, units, specimen orientation, conditioning and acceptance method. A statement such as “EN 13706 compliant” is incomplete without the profile grade and supporting test evidence.

ASTM D3917 is primarily a dimensional-tolerance specification. It should not be used as proof that a pultruded profile meets mechanical, fire or structural design requirements. GB 50608 operates at an engineering-application level and should not be treated as a manufacturing equivalent to EN 13706.
