Hand Lay-up FRP Manufacturers in China

Hand lay-up is an open-mold composite process in which dry reinforcement is positioned manually, wet with resin and consolidated using rollers or squeegees. It suits large, complex or low-volume FRP parts, but quality depends strongly on material control, workmanship and traceable layer-by-layer inspection.

How the hand lay-up process works

A single-sided tool defines one surface. Operators build the laminate in sequence, remove trapped air and control resin distribution before cure; skill and work instructions substitute for machine automation.

  1. 01

    Mold preparation

Clean, release and inspect the tool; apply gel coat where specified.

Control: Verify tool condition, release system and gel-coat cure state.
  2. 02

    Cut & stage plies

Cut reinforcement and core kits to the controlled ply schedule.

Control: Confirm material, orientation, splice and kit identity.
  3. 03

    Wet-out

Apply mixed resin to each reinforcement layer by roller, brush or controlled dispense.

Control: Track mix ratio, batch time, temperature and complete wet-out.
  4. 04

    Consolidate

Roll or squeegee the laminate to remove air and seat plies and core.

Control: Inspect bubbles, bridging, corners, overlaps and resin-rich pools.
  5. 05

    Cure & finish

Allow the laminate to cure, demold, trim, drill and assemble.

Control: Confirm cure, dimensions, edges, bond lines and repair limits.

What enters the process

1

Mold surface

Release agent and optional gel coat establish the cosmetic face.

2

Reinforcement

Chopped-strand mat, woven roving, multiaxial or unidirectional plies.

3

Matrix

Polyester, vinyl ester or epoxy mixed and used within its working life.

4

Core & inserts

Foam, balsa, honeycomb and local hard points where the design requires.

Strong process fit
  • Large shells, tanks, covers and marine parts
  • Complex low-rate components
  • Prototypes and tooling-sensitive programs
Engineering watch-outs
  • Repeatability depends on trained laminators and disciplined travelers
  • Open processing requires emissions, contamination and environment control

Defect diagnosis

Common defects, causes and detection

DEFECT 01

Voids or dry reinforcement

Likely cause: Incomplete wet-out, trapped air or rushed consolidation.

Detection: Backlighting where possible, tap/ultrasonic inspection or cut sections.

DEFECT 02

Resin-rich or resin-starved zones

Likely cause: Inconsistent application, material movement or pooling on geometry.

Detection: Thickness, mass, cut-section and appearance checks.

DEFECT 03

Bridging or wrinkles

Likely cause: Poor drape, wrong darting or inadequate corner consolidation.

Detection: Layer inspection before coverage and final NDT when critical.

Advanced Technik Composite Corp. (ATCC) is headquartered in Changzhou, Jiangsu. Its official history says the business was established in July 2017 and changed its Chinese legal name from Changzhou Qifu Antai Composite Materials Technology Co., Ltd.—the name still used by the China Composites Expo listing—to on October 20, 2025. The current website focuses the group on aircraft-grade carbon-fiber composite structures for civil-aircraft subcontracting, low-altitude aircraft and high-end industrial applications. It says ATCC fully acquired Germany's COTESA GmbH and EC in 2018 and now operates a six-base, two-center footprint with global sales offices. These history, program, customer, qualification and footprint statements are company- or organizer-published and have not been independently verified by GetFRP.

Changzhou Tiansheng Composite Co., Ltd. is a structural-core exhibitor from Changzhou, Jiangsu listed by China Composites Expo under the English name CHANGZHOU TIANSHENG COMPOSITE CO., LTD. The current official website of Changzhou Tiansheng New Materials Group identifies Tiansheng Composite in its group structure and says a wholly owned subsidiary produces and processes structural foam. This is a parent-operated website, not a separate subsidiary domain. The official product pages list Strucell PVC structural foam, surface processing and pre-cut kits within the structural-foam range, while the expo classifies the exhibitor under foam cores, honeycomb cores and sandwich panels. The history page uses a shortened early subsidiary name, so the public official record reviewed here does not establish the current legal entity's incorporation year without ambiguity; no establishment year is assigned. The expo description also applies the parent's 2011 stock-market listing to the subsidiary profile, which must not be read as evidence that the subsidiary itself is listed. Corporate relationship, product, performance, market-position, project and certification statements are group- or organizer-published and have not been independently verified by GetFRP.
