Spray-up FRP Manufacturers in China

FRP spray-up uses a chopper gun to cut continuous glass roving, combine it with catalyzed resin and spray the mixture onto an open mold. Operators then roll the deposited laminate to compact it and remove trapped air, making the method economical for large, moderate-detail parts.

How the frp spray-up process works

The gun meters fiber, resin and catalyst while operator motion sets coverage and local thickness. Rolling and staged buildup are essential because spraying alone does not create a void-free structural laminate.

  1. 01

    Prepare mold

Clean and release the tool; apply and verify gel coat when specified.

Control: Inspect surface, film thickness and cure readiness.
  2. 02

    Set chopper gun

Load roving and establish resin, catalyst and glass delivery.

Control: Calibrate outputs and verify spray pattern before production.
  3. 03

    Deposit laminate

Spray passes build a controlled layer over the mold surface.

Control: Maintain distance, angle, overlap, coverage and local mass.
  4. 04

    Roll & stage

Consolidate each lift and allow controlled staging before added thickness.

Control: Remove air and avoid heat buildup, sagging and fiber wash.
  5. 05

    Cure & finish

Complete cure, demold, trim, drill and inspect the part.

Control: Check thickness map, surface, edges, dimensions and repairs.
Material system

What enters the process

1

Cosmetic layer

Optional gel coat selected for appearance and exposure.

2

Spray laminate

Chopped glass deposited with polyester or vinyl ester resin.

3

Local reinforcement

Fabric, core or inserts may be hand-placed in high-load areas.

4

Back surface

Rolled and finished to the agreed workmanship standard.

Strong process fit
  • Large covers, shells and bathware
  • Moderate production with low-cost tooling
  • Parts where one cosmetic face is sufficient
Engineering watch-outs
  • Chopped reinforcement limits directional tailoring versus fabrics
  • Emissions, overspray and operator consistency require strong controls

Critical process controls and evidence

A supplier claim is useful only when the process window is tied to the offered material, tooling, drawing revision and production batch.

Defect diagnosis

Common defects, causes and detection

DEFECT 01

Air pockets

Likely cause: Insufficient rolling, excessive lift thickness or difficult corners.

Detection: Visual/tap inspection, backlighting or section samples.

DEFECT 02

Uneven fiber content

Likely cause: Uncalibrated gun, poor motion or unstable roving feed.

Detection: Material usage, burn-off/coupon checks and thickness mapping.

DEFECT 03

Cracking or print-through

Likely cause: Excess exotherm, shrinkage, heavy local buildup or early demold.

Detection: Controlled lighting, cure review and surface standard.
